Anxiety and Sleep

It’s perfectly natural to worry about not getting enough sleep. Most people don’t get enough. However, when you are suffering from anxiety, insomnia presents additional challenges.

Usually when we approach sleep with a little bit of anxiety saying things like “how am i going to fall asleep?” or “I really need to sleep.” What we are doing is creating a performance anxiety and setting a precident that if we don’t sleep we are failing.

Instead, try telling yourself that this is an opportunity to sleep. If it happens, great, if it doesn’t that’s fine too. The important thing is that there is no expectation that you must sleep. Now I know it’s easier said than done. However, part of overcoming anxiety is learning to stop anxious thoughts and to control our reactions to stressors.

Good luck!
