Is it necessary to use hand positions while doing Reiki self-healing?

November 20th, 2009 | by admin |

Can I just use one hand position, say the front solar plexus and let it flow to wherever its required for abt an hour.?

Extra: I learnt Reiki 1, and 2 in September’09. And I have seen good results.

As with almost every so called "alternative" healing practices, and their religious cousins, there is always some ritualistic action that must be undertaken for the magic to work, or the god to listen to your prayers

Reiki…as an example of the "energy work" types of practices (others being Therapeutic Touch, and Wiccan healing) is no exception. The hand motions make no difference at all. Their entire purpose is distract the applicant and occupy them with a purposeless diversion, while their brains imagine something is happening. TT found this out many years ago, when their own studies found that it made no difference whether or not clients were touched during thee healing ceremony.

You may have "seen good results"….whatever that means…but that is only one persons subjective and I’m sorry to point out, gullible experience. What people usually report are vague and subjective things like decrease in pain, more relaxed etc….nothing that can be objectively measured. When energy practices are subjected to objective scientific study…all the reported benefits disappear.

So, you can use whatever hand positions you like, you can even just pretend to use hand positions, or use the wrong hand positions. It makes no difference when you are engaged in a useless time waster like Reiki

Most Reiki practitioners learn the "orthodox" form of doing Reiki, including specific hand positions and the symbols learned in Reiki II. One rationale for this is that practitioners are passing down a tradition discovered (or re-discovered) by Dr. Mikao Usui. Without a tradition, some would argue that Reiki sessions would differ radically from practitioner to practitioner. If that difference prevailed, would would be the "truest" or "best" form of Reiki?

Some Reiki practitioners, I speculate, spend their lives or most of their lives performing the orthodox hand positions and symbols they first learned. If that feels right to them and produces positive results in their clients, then good for them.

However, since the first teachings of Dr. Usui, I strongly suspect that the hand positions and symbols have changed over the many years. Very small changes can lead to larger changes over the decades. I notice how many different schools of Reiki have arisen. Many of them claim their form of Reiki is the superior or more authentic school of Reiki.

Finally, to answer your question, I suggest you search your soul and use your own intuition about what hand positions work best. As a Reiki master, that is what I do. Most bodyworkers of one kind or another learn the orthodox style and over time adapt the techniques to the needs of the clients and to the practitioners’ own instincts. Besides, how can you use hand positions when you are doing distance healing?

I was always taught that Reiki is an "intelligent" energy that goes whereever it needs to go, either physically or mentally. Thus, putting your hands on the solar plexus and letting Reiki flow follows in that tradition. However, I would not suggest getting tied down to that one method.

You say you are seeing good results, so you might continue with your current style. However, in 2 or 5 years, you may be discovering new ways to apply Reiki.

Just keep searching your soul and using your intuition. Also, listen to the feedback of your clients. I doubt very much that Dr. Usui would have like to have seen his hand techniques "carved in stone" and never, ever altered.

It is the spirit and love of Reiki that heals, not necessarily the hand techniques you originally learned. I wish you well.

Most ‘healers’ are ignorant of science, and routinely promote implausible interventions with full credulous conviction. No specific position is necessary, it will make little difference. It is pseudo-scientific claptrap, on the same parr as Homoeopathy.

    A comment:

    Literally translated Reiki is:

    The Universal Energy

    such as Chi; Phrama ; the Laying on of hands; and so forth and so on;

so the energy would flow from you hands to the right places anyway !

I use the Tenihiro CD from Bronwen Steine of the International House of Reiki. On track 2 she leads you through the 21 hand positions. On track 3 there is just the music. On track 1 she explains that experience will lead a practitioner to use hands only on areas they sense they need and there is nothing wrong with going over them all (takes about 30 minutes).

I love the CD – the music and the sound of the ocean in the background help me focus. I like the feeling of connection to the Japanese rituals. I do the ritual bathing before starting my self-healing work.

I think most practitioners work out their own individual system for their practice. There is no dyed-in-the-wool way to do it.
