How do I tell if my bellybutton piercing is healing correctly or not?

September 30th, 2009 | by admin |

I got my bellybutton pierced 2 weeks from today and I was wondering how you can tell if it’s healing correctly or not? How do you tell if your bellybutton is infected? No I don’t think mine is infected but I just want to know what to look for in the future incase it does get infected or whatever.

Normal signs of healing will be slight redness around the holes, a clear, white, or slightly yellowish discharge that dries on the piercing (crusty stuff) and possibly a little soreness in the beginning. Piercings may have a tendency to have a series of "ups and downs" during healing where they get better and worse from time to time. Keep in mind a navel is a slow healing piercing. It can take up to a year for some people to fully heal. (It will look healed in a few months, but keep in mind the inside may still be healing)
Signs of an infection can be a variety of things. Most common are redness, tenderness, green discharge, and foul smelling discharge. Keep in mind that with proper hygiene (you shower regularly and wash your hands before touching the piercing) your chances of infection are pretty low. Just be careful in areas that other peoples bodily fluids have been like gyms and tanning beds. If you go to www.safepiercing.org and look under the tab labeled ‘getting pierced’ it will have more information than I could ever type on here. It is the website for the association of professional piercers. These guys really know what they are talking about and you will find a ton of good information on troubleshooting and aftercare.

I hope this helped!

if the area starts to go really red or if it starts to get a scab around it, then it is most likely infected
also you can usually tell if it is generally painful and feels hotter than what it usually would to touch
just make sure that you keep on appliying some sort of antiseptic to it to avoid any of this

iv had my bellly button pierced for 6months and took it out last night as i realised it was close to getting infected so im going to get it done again

but it gets really red and really really sore to touch and you can treat this quicly with a savlon spray which is antiseptic wash or sudocream which seems to help.

u can tell if its infected when a dark line makes its way up your body. from you belly button. but if you should wash it daily with antiseptic anyways so it doesnt get infected seening as youve only had it done for 2weeks x

You will know when its infected as you will see bright red around the piercing and you will feel the throb in you belly. Use SURGICAL SPIRIT. Its great, i use it everyday on mine even when its not infected, prevention is better than cure, god bless.
